CASE STUDY: Drs. Borders and Associates
Drs. Borders and Associates is a private health practice located in Lexington, Kentucky.
The Challenge
The seven physicians that comprise Drs. Borders and Associates needed to address two critical IT missions: implement an Electronic Medical Records (EMR) system and secure access to patient records, ensuring compliance with HIPAA requirements; and provide a system ensuring authorized physician-only access to medical records regardless of location.
The Solution
IntelliSuite implemented Microsoft Windows 2000 Active Directory employee and physician authentication. To provide virtual access to patient medical records and other business applications, IntelliSuite deployed Advanced Imaging Concept's Impact MD EMR System on Citrix MetaFrame Presentation Server. The virtual applications were then web-enabled with Citrix Web Interface and secured with SonicWall Firewall and Citrix Secure Gateway Services.
Implementing Logico Smart Card Solutions
One more issue needed to be tackled before Drs Borders could be confident they had achieved HIPAA compliance: Secure patient records from unauthorized viewing as physicians move from room to room. Logico Smart Card Solutions was called upon to implement their logical access solution. Using Logico, workstation access is granted only when an authorized employee inserts their smart card and authenticates with the correct pin. Physicians can review patient records by inserting their Logico smart cards at terminals throughout the workplace. This process automatically signs authorized personnel into the system, “hotseating” them to their last location and view in the system. When personnel leave the room, they remove their smart card from the card reader; their current view is saved on the card itself and the user is logged off. Records and applications cannot be accessed without authenticating through Logico.
